This building symbolized the influence of American capital in the telephone business in Cuba. The Cuban Telephone Company opened in 1927 this building 62 meters high being the highest in the country at the time.

The Cuban Telephone Company settled in New York until, in 1916, until it was bought by the Cubans, so transferring its registered No. 153 Eagle Street in Havana. But 1924 and Sosthenes Behn Hernand Brothers, by the company, decided to replace it with a large modern building that dominated the Havana scene and attract attention worldwide.
